STEM Scholarships
for aspiring engineers

ABOUT THE Programme

For students who are torn between studying at a university versus a college; a scholarship might just sway it for you.

The University of Bolton is proud to be home to the UK’s only National Centre for Motorsport Engineering (NCME) and with the support of ROKiT and Kingfisher, have secured funding to help two aspiring motorsport engineers undertake three year degree courses.

The STEM Scholarships fees will be waived for all three years of the degree course, and they will also cover the costs of student accommodation as well as a subsistence allowance for other expenses.

A particular aim of these scholarships is to support aspiring engineers from disadvantaged backgrounds with a view to addressing the current lack of diversity in the sector.

Engineering at the next level

Automotive performance engineering takes the normal requirements of engineering to the next level. When winning a race can depend on the tiniest of marginal advantages, the optimal performance of every single moving part in the vehicle matters. We’re talking about precision to the degree of how temperatures make metals behave in spaces where micrometers are the difference between functionality and failure.

The competitive nature of the motorsport industry drives engineers to innovate and develop novel ideas that power progress in the automotive industry. The University of Bolton’s NCME gives you the theoretical, practical and hands-on knowledge and experience needed to overtake your competition in the field of motorsports engineering.

Giving youngsters a chance

Fernley, Mallya and Kendrick have worked at the highest level in motor racing and are acutely aware of the lack of diversity and opportunities for disadvantaged youngsters in a sport famed for its costs and Lewis Hamilton, the seven-times Formula One world champion, has often spoken of his wish for more diversity at the top level in motorsport.

The Scholarship benefactors worry that the costs of attending university may deter even the brightest and most enthusiastic youngsters and have co-operated with the University of Bolton, which will waive fees for the two chosen students, to seek out the talent of tomorrow.

” We are extremely grateful to the benefactors and the University of Bolton, which has waived fees to make these scholarship degree courses possible. These scholarships will help us to achieve our aim of enabling students from disadvantaged backgrounds secure employment in the motorsport or related engineering industries. “

Mark Busfield, Director of NCME

Mark Busfield, who pioneered the course in 2017 at the University of Bolton with a dedicated team of Industry and academic specialists, said: “We want to give a helping hand to young people who have the drive and enthusiasm for motorsport engineering to get the best education involving top experts from the industry.”

“We want to give hope to people that however difficult their circumstances they do have the opportunity to succeed in the field they are passionate about.”

Applicants will need to have achieved the required exam results, and is limited to full-time UK students only, who will be required to submit a personal statement of 500 words. A shortlist will be drawn up and applicants then interviewed to identify the two successful scholarship candidates.
